Carter Calls It Quits

posted by Alan Greenblatt

CarterSteve Carter, Indiana's Republican attorney general and the biggest vote-getter in Hoosier history among candidates for state office, has announced he won't run this year for a third term. The parties will pick their candidates for the office at conventions this summer.

The Indianapolis Star piece on Carter's decision mentions his work on consumer protection and a do not call registry, but bizarrely fails to mention his work on abortion. Carter took Planned Parenthood to court to force the organization to show investigators its files on patients who are minors.

Carter said he needed the records to investigate possible molestation, but abortion rights advocates saw the move as intimidation and a violation of patient privacy. A similar legal strategy was pursued by Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, who lost his reelection bid in 2006.
