If At First You Don't Succeed

posted by Alan Greenblatt

Speier_and_schwarzenegger_2The Sacramento Bee profiles Jackie Speier, a former local official in San Mateo County and longtime California legislator. Speier looks likely to triumph in tomorrow's special election to replace the late Congressman Tom Lantos.

Speier first ran for the seat 29 years ago, in the wake of the Jonestown murder of her boss, Rep. Leo Ryan.

Speier ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2006 – an attempt seen as a step toward eventually running for governor. Now, she hopes Tuesday's vote will take her to Congress – and full circle – for the duration of her political career.

"I realized the power to change things in the legislative branch. I think this is where I'll be as long as the voters want me," Speier said. "I'm absolutely convinced there was a plan. There was a reason I didn't win (the lieutenant governor's election). This is what I was supposed to do."
